Sustainability at SUMA: Our approach, our commitment

As part of our participation in the Climate-Neutral Allgäu 2030 alliance (German initiative), we have committed ourselves to achieving complete climate neutrality by 2030 and will continuously evaluate and implement appropriate measures to achieve this goal.

Protecting the environment is deeply rooted in our company's fundamental philosophy. SUMA products are used wherever waste materials are reused: when biogas is produced, wastewater is treated and purified, or slurry is used to fertilize fields. In addition to our economic orientation, ecological criteria are also a key consideration in our company. We consider the protection of people and the environment throughout the entire product life cycle. A pleasant and healthy production environment and the conservation of resources through environmentally friendly manufacturing processes are just as important to us as the safety and cost-effectiveness of our products.
In our sustainability report, we transparently explain what responsible action means to us.

Because we care about the environment

Building complex with potential

Based on a maximally sustainable building concept, construction of the new assembly hall at the company's headquarters in Germany began in 2019 and was completed in fall 2020.

With the new building, a separate power supply was no longer necessary. This resulted in the need for a separate transformer station. The new hall was also equipped with photovoltaics (211 kWp). With growth, electricity demand has also increased. The new hall is also heated with geothermal energy, which also requires a lot of electricity.

A commercial storage facility is the logical consequence for temporarily storing the energy generated by the photovoltaic system.

Overall, the system is intended to cover annual electricity consumption.

The building also houses new meeting and office rooms as well as the CASUMA company canteen. The canteen serves fresh, regional, and seasonal food for employees and visitors every day.

Green electricity from the company roof

In 2012, we installed a PV system with a capacity of almost 300 kWp to feed surplus energy into the grid. With the construction of the new assembly and administration building at our headquarters in Germany in 2020, the system was expanded to over 500 kWp.
Through the use of photovoltaics, we achieve a self-sufficiency level of 39.39 percent.

Electric mobility

The more than 90 electric vehicles provided to our German employees as company cars require a lot of electricity.

Our employees charge their electric cars in the company car park. A total of 47 charging stations are available. The electricity is also produced by our own photovoltaic system. Electricity from renewable energy sources makes e-mobility a coherent overall concept. Electric mobility is one of a number of internal ecological measures.

SUMA operates and acts sustainably

SUMA stands for fair working conditions, safety, further training, and active responsibility—toward employees, the region, and the value chain.

Free drinks for employees and visitors are available from water dispensers. Where possible, packaging material is always made from renewable raw materials. The use of plastic has been reduced to a minimum. We have also replaced disposable items such as paper towels with cloth towels or hand dryers.

We support environmental projects such as the “Plant for the Planet” tree planting initiative with financial donations.

Another contribution that SUMA makes to the environment is the colorful flowers on the company premises. Wildflower meadows are not only beautiful to look at, but also make an enormous contribution to the preservation of many insect and plant species.

Our approach impressively demonstrates that environmental protection is not at odds with social action and economic success.
